  • Program overview

    The Westpac Institutional Bank (WIB) Finance Program is a one year rotational program designed to give you the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the operations of the business through a series of rotations within three different teams.

    Westpac Institutional Bank (WIB) serves the financial needs of corporations, institutions and government customers. The core purpose of WIB Finance is to provide adequate and accurate financial information and superior analysis to the WIB business in a timely manner in order to support the business in its strategic and operational decision making.

    During your rotations with WIB Finance, you will obtain a full understanding of Westpac's financial processes and systems, as well as an in-depth exposure to WIB financial dynamics, products and customers.

    There are several teams that offer places under this program including the Middle Office and several of the product accounting teams including Foreign Exchange and Treasury.

  • What we're looking for

    You are currently a Commerce, Business or Accounting student with strong grades and you probably have your sights set on gaining your professional accounting qualifications.

    You have confidence in yourself and your work, enjoy working on projects, and have a competitive nature and a thick skin. You don't believe that university is purely an academic pursuit, but also an opportunity to broaden your horizons. You've taken the opportunity to enhance your leadership and interpersonal skills through your involvement in clubs, societies and extracurricular activities.

    You have the energy to do many things at once and excel in them all with modest pride. You have:

  • Job description

    Each rotation of the WIB Financial Graduate Program will provide you with vastly different perspectives and experience. Some of the work that you might be involved in includes:

    • Assisting with the production of daily and monthly management and financial reporting
    • Assisting with the production of Westpac's statutory and regulatory reporting
    • Performing detailed analysis on various profit and loss and balance sheet items
    • Reconciliation of various profit and loss and balance sheet items
    • Providing analysis of our taxation position and reconciliation of our taxation position
    • Budgeting and planning
    • Providing strategic, financial and business advice to the various business units which comprise WIB
    • Interacting closely with the other areas of the Bank including Risk Management, Compliance, Operations and other Accounting and Finance functions
  • Rotation

    A rotation is the time you spend in any one department or area during the 12 month program, which may include our middle office and/or product accounting areas.

    It's true that you need to be in the right place at the right time, but it is also true that you can control your own destiny.

    The WIB Finance Graduate Program will give you the opportunity to set your goals and work towards them, and provide you with a number of career options when you move into a permanent role at the end of 12 months.

  • Career path

    Your time on the program will provide you with a good overview of WIB and a strong enterprise-wide network. There are a number of career options open to you at the end of your WIB Finance Program.

    Opportunities include roles that provide direct support to Westpac Institutional Bank. Alternatively you may choose to work as part of a project team providing analysis or support to a project.

  • Support and training

    All programs provide full career development support, structured training and sponsorship of the CA/CPA program, qualifying you as a professional accountant.

    We place significant investment in the training of our graduates. Examples of training programs include:

    • Business writing skills
    • Presentation skills
    • Financial modelling skills

    All WIB graduates will also participate in a number of social and team activities throughout their graduate year.

    You will have a significant support structure available throughout your program including:

    • Mentor - a senior member of the business who will be assigned to provide you with career guidance and support
    • Buddy - a past graduate who will provide peer support
    • Graduate Manager - who will provide overall support to you throughout the program and manage your graduate program experience
    • Placement Manager - your day-to-day manager that you report to during each rotation

    There will be lots of opportunity to network with other graduates in Westpac, and you'll be granted automatic membership to the Westpac Graduate Alumni at the end of your graduate year.

    WIB Finance

    The WIB Finance team is responsible for accounting, reporting, planning, forecasting and budgeting for the WIB business. Their activities include:

    • Reporting on the profitability of customers and our specialist products
    • Tactical improvement and streamlining of manual processes and related controls and procedures (quality, efficiency and effectiveness)
    • Analysis and quantification of business benefits and justification associated with changes
    • Provision of business advice and financial trends, financial planning and budgeting.
