  • Program overview

    The Consumer Financial Services (CFS) Generalist Program is a 12 month rotational program that will give you the opportunity to gain valuable career experience in three different areas within Westpac's Consumer Banking division. Your rotations can be spent in Marketing, Product, Analytics, Finance,  Risk, Human Resources, Strategy, or you might have an opportunity to work on a project.  We encourage you to spend time in our Sales division for one of your rotations to gain front line customer experience.

    This is an ideal program if you are looking for the opportunity to get a taste of different areas before deciding where you'd like to kick start your career with Westpac. During the program you'll be introduced to a broad range of roles and challenges. The experience that you gain in the generalist program will provide you with a range of career path opportunities when you move into a permanent role after 12 months.

  • Job description

    During the 12 month graduate program, the work that you undertake within Consumer Financial Services (CFS) will be quite varied depending on which rotations you complete.

    Product

    Within the Product area of CFS, the type of work that you might be involved in includes:

    • Searching for market opportunities and product and process innovations that will improve profit, market share, customer experience and/or reduce cost
    • Developing and implementing market leading customer solutions
    • Ensuring development recommendations reflect a sustainable and profitable balance between the short and longer term interests of stakeholders, consistent with Bank strategy
    • Project managing product developments from concept through to build, implementation and embedding with the sales force
    • Ensuring product features, policies and processes developed are efficient and accurately and publicly documented both internally and externally
    • Achieving close and productive collaboration with key internal and external stakeholders, suppliers and industry boards
    Marketing

    Within Marketing, you might be involved in the execution of a range of marketing activities. Some of your responsibilities may include:

    • Briefing in of campaigns (above the line and below the line) to the agencies and data providers
    • Approval of creative work completed by the agencies
    • Developing communications plans as well as seeing the creative through the production process
    • Communication to the broader Sales business on all campaigns
    • Complete post campaign analysis
    Projects

    Project roles that you might undertake during your 12 month program can be varied and may include:

    • Process efficiency projects
    • Reviews of role requirements and existing skills capabilities within various business areas
    • New business acquisition projects
    • Product research initiatives
  • Rotation

    A rotation is the time you'll spend in any one department or area. During the CFS Generalist Program, you'll complete three, four-month rotations over a 12 month period.

    Depending on business demand, there are likely to be rotation opportunities in the following business units:

    • Marketing
    • Product e.g. Personal lending products
    • Project work
    • Distribution & Sales
    • Our business is diverse, so naturally the type of work you'll be involved in will also be diverse. For example, when you rotate within the Sales network, you'll have the opportunity to work closely with our Consumer customers.

  • Career path

    Once you've completed the CFS Generalist Program, you might kick start your career as a Product Analyst before continuing on to Product Manager and Senior Product Manager roles within a few years.

    Within Marketing, you might launch your career as a Marketing Assistant before moving into a Marketing Manager role, followed by a Senior Marketing Manager role.

    In both career paths, there may be opportunities to gain experience in Marketing and Product roles as your career progresses. You may also have the opportunity to specialise in a Sales-oriented area if that's where your passions lie.

  • Support and training

    During your graduate program we'll work with you to bring out your best and encourage you to grow and develop. Your Graduate Manager will provide you with support and direction during your program and will be responsible for working with you to set up your rotations. Your Graduate Manager will also facilitate a number of graduate events throughout the year and will help you find an appropriate role at the end of your program.

    You'll also have the support of your Mentor who will offer career management advice throughout the year and provide guidance on which rotation opportunities would be most suited to your individual development and career aspirations. As well as on-the-job development opportunities, we also provide formal training throughout the year. You will participate in a training curriculum specifically designed to help you make the most of your graduate year by equipping you with the necessary communication and business skills for success.

    Your Buddy will also provide a great support for you during your graduate year. As an ex-graduate, your Buddy can help you settle into the organisation and provide you with support and advice throughout your program.

CFS is responsible for a broad range of financial products, including savings and cheque accounts, demand and term deposits, credit cards, and personal and housing loans.
