  • Program overview

    The Business Financial Services (BFS) Risk Graduate Program gives you the opportunity to work within various teams in BFS Risk through a series of three rotations over a 12 month period. All three rotations will have a business unit risk focus as opposed to an enterprise risk focus.

    The BFS Operational Risk & Compliance team is a Trusted Business Adviser providing value-adding advice on Operational Risk and Compliance issues impacting BFS. They work with other risk stakeholders including Consumer Financial Services (CFS), Group Operational Risk & Compliance, Government Relations, Legal, Financial Crimes Control and Group Assurance to ensure that risk issues are managed within the risk tolerances defined by the business.

    You're currently a Commerce, Finance, Business, Engineering, Mathematics or Actuarial student who has taken the opportunity to enhance your leadership skills through your involvement in extra curricular activities such as campus clubs and societies.

  • Job description

    During the BFS Risk Graduate Program, you will gain exposure to increasingly crucial risk management practices required for the success of modern financial institutions. You will be involved with a wide spectrum of work that will allow you to develop both qualitative and quantitative skills. The type of work you may be involved in includes:

    • Applying quantitative techniques to model the operational risk capital required by the enterprise
    • Being an integral part of validating models from throughout the Bank
    • Designing and developing ethics policies, and other tools to support risk decisioning
    • Investigating compliance issues and breaches
    • Being a Regulatory liaison
    • Consolidating reporting of the group's credit risk information to both internal and external stakeholders including Westpac's Board
  • Rotation

    A rotation is the time you'll spend in any one business team during your 12 month program.

    The Risk Specialist Program enables you to work in a range of business teams through a series of four rotations over a one year period. The rotations will vary depending on the stream you work in.

    The Risk Graduate Program will lead you to a permanent role within Westpac that will continue to develop your technical and leadership skills.

  • Career path

    The Risk Specialist Program offers you a great range of career options. At the end of the 12 month program, you may kick start your career as a Consultant in the Operational Risk Team or as an Analyst in Market Risk or Enterprise Risk Analytics. There are also opportunities to remain within Risk working at an enterprise level.

  • Support and training

    During your graduate program we'll work with you to bring out your best and encourage you to grow and develop. Your Graduate Manager will provide you with support and direction during your program and will be responsible for working with you to set up your rotations. Your Graduate Manager will also facilitate a number of graduate events throughout the year and will help you find an appropriate role at the end of your program.

    You'll also have the support of your Mentor who will offer career management advice throughout the year and provide guidance on which rotation opportunities would be most suited to your individual development and career aspirations. As well as on-the-job development opportunities, we also provide formal training throughout the year. You will participate in a training curriculum specifically designed to help you make the most of your graduate year by equipping you with the necessary communication and business skills for success.

    Your Buddy will also provide a great support for you during your graduate year. As an ex-graduate, your Buddy can help you settle into the organisation and provide you with support and advice throughout your program.
